This brain, that was shut down with anesthetic restores itself, miraculously, to crystal clear functioning. This body, that was a beating corpse on a surgical slab has slept soundly and arises refreshed, resurrected. This knee, that was entered through four small portals, explored with a magical eye on the end of a probe, excavated to remove four large ‘foreign objects’ and flushed out to remove the smaller bits, rests happily on a plumped-up cushion. The swelling and soreness subside with each new day. Healing is happening.
How incredible it is that healing just happens. Sure, it’s often facilitated by the intervention of surgeons, care-givers, and others with uncanny gifts (Life’s lovely helpers.) But who can truthfully claim that they ‘do it?’
Whatever the inconceivable ‘IT’ is that lives this body-mind and knows exactly how to restore its systems to their proper functioning – whatever IT is, it gets my deepest bows of speechless gratitude. I’d be on my knees – but that will have to wait.
Is it true that living naturally, fully, wholly,
is something that one can turn into a goal,
an ultimate state?
Some say that the moment Life is assessed
by a cognizing process
and assigned a value on a scale of how-things-should-be,
the minute Life is seen to need changing
and plans are laid to alter Life’s flow –
that’s when Life’s lost.
They claim that’s when one begins to wonder
why the marvel of living has dried up,
why one feels only half alive, why one feels as though
drowning in a sea of ‘shoulds’.
However, these are devious dualistic perspectives;
they make grand promises they cannot deliver.
The trick to living naturally, fully, wholly
is simply to embrace the Totality of Life
and realize that you are inseparable from IT.
Whatever is happening is Life’s design.
If there’s desire to change anything, that’s Life’s desire.
If there’s desire to remember the Truth, that’s Life’s desire.
If one forgets to remember, that buck stops with Life as well.
And in case a crucial little line above passed you by
I will put it here, again:
… and realize that you are inseparable from IT…
Dull sky draped over grey and textured sea.
A couple of early fishing boats buzzing about stalking their prey.
Palm fronds quiet, enjoying a rare rest on this storm-pregnant dawn.
Do you favor the ‘neti-neti’ (not-this, not-this) path or are you inclined towards the ‘yes-yes’ (yes to everything) approach to Truth?
I found out that it makes no difference what path one ‘signs up’ for or what one practices. Once the source of all your utterances is given space, silent unknowable knowingness is laid bare.
And IT couldn’t care less what path you take, or how diligent your practice might be; IT is utterly unaffected.
Rest. Relax. Release.
Returning to suchness is peace.
clamorous sea-speak this morning
for one who grew up amongst the coastal cliffs
the tussock-crowned dunes
the tidal pools
the crashing surf and wild symphonic joy
of the ocean inexplicably called Pacific
“there’s bound to be a salt-wave forever lapping in the heart”
she-who-scribbles loves water;
inescapable conditioning of the cells
well, ‘I’ has no preferences
and that means It embraces everything:
incomparably perfect Love!
everything one is aware of
– every one of those “ten thousand things” –
gets one’s attention
everything except Awareness ITself
isn’t that incredible?
What if all those ups and downs in The Grace Game (aka Snakes and Ladders) were the play of Awareness awareing ITself? What if they were immaculately and uniquely designed moves solely intended to wake the wee-me from its dream of being an independent player? What if there was no competition involved and the finishing point was actually the beginning of a new Game, one where the player now realizes that there’s only One Player and that the board, the dice (aka ‘chance’), the player and all those experiences – the good the bad and the ugly – are IT?
What can be said about the overpopulation of the planet? What can be said about starvation, about terrorism, about climate change? What can be said about the spread of diseases like AIDS?
Whatever is said or imagined by thought will be the product of conceptualization – the same source that produced the problems, the questions, and that endlessly spins the solutions. But genuine change cannot be wrought by thought’s projections, for it only knows the known, and the known is the past. Revolution is never creative; it may be innovative, but that’s not the same as creative. Innovation is generated by thought re-arranging what it already knows. Is it possible for thought to find a new question? Or can new questions only arise from That which is beyond thought?
What thought knows cannot be the Truth for Truth is changeless and unknowable.
Go for the guts of IT: find the changeless, unknowable Truth and then see what happens to the rest.
Watch in amazement as Life rises to meet ITself – with wisdom and compassion and your name on ITs ID card.
The weird thing about rapture is that it can’t be called an experience; it’s the absence of an experiencer. It can’t be recalled, although in retrospect there’s a sense that Awareness has been simply awareing Itself. It has to be the ultimate relaxation. Perhaps it’s the natural state of Being-ness.
Joseph Campbell spoke about finding the still point within where commitment falls away. But I think it’s impossible to find the still point. I found that when the seeker of the still point gives up the search
IT finds you
The still point is like a magnet: IT draws you to ITself. And once that magnetic beam has you in its pull, all that you thought you were disappears. Like into a wormhole. Like into another version of the universe.
