  1. “Man is born free and everywhere he is in chains” (J.J. Rousseau).

    Because of social and political constraints (there was no democracy then!), as the conventional interpretation has it?

    Who is bound, who is in chains? By what power? Today’s philosophers do not have a satisfactory answer either, nor does “that dismal science”, sociology.

    Now we are all democrats.

    1. The sages and a few wise leaders who have been incarcerated or tortured all agree – the only freedom worth its name is found within.

      It is a citadel, a fortress, a refuge, No external circumstances change it for a second.

      No escape!
